JOEY
Sex/colour: Male Black
D.O.B: approx 2000
Breed: Lurcher poss Greyhound-Saluki cross
Came to AfG: January 2006
JOEY came into the care of AfG after it seems being just passed ‘from
pillar to post’ over the past 6 years of his life.
The information we established, he was picked up as a stray and for some
reason he was microchipped (even though this did not become law until 2010).
We believe the first time he was picked up from stray kennels, their
advice was to get Joey microchipped.
He found himself at the stray kennels at least two more times being
homed then returned.
The person the microchip was registered to said she had homed him to
another person, who returned him to her as they didnt want him…she
also did not want him.
She contacted AfG to ask if we were able to take him as she did not want
to risk ‘giving him away’ again and no other rescue were able to take him.
AfG had a suitable foster home for Joey where he would be in the company
of other rescued Sighthounds (as we were told he was sociable with most
dogs).
Once Joey was in our care we found information on some of his background
from the stray kennels, who we felt were also partly irresponsible for
him being passed around.
Joey was good with the resident hounds and children in his foster home.
He was quite bewildered (after all he had been through) but soon settled
into a routine, helped by the company of the other hounds.
Joey enjoyed his food and walks, so it was not long until his mental and
physical condition improved.
He was then able to be neutered.
Joey often accompanied AfG on various events.
It was at one event, we met a couple who spent time with the hounds and
were particularly attracted to Joey.
We felt they were a nice couple, hearing they had always rescued dogs
their last one being an Old English Sheepdog.
They had become acquainted with several rescued Lurchers and Greyhounds
and now retired, felt a Sighthound would be suitable for them.
We then told them Joey was now looking for his forever home and
explained about his background and what type of home would suit him.
We arranged for a homecheck to be done.
As there were no other dogs in the home, we felt Joey would settle as
his adopters would be with him most of the time and he would meet
various dogs on his daily walks.
So Joey started on another journey in his forever home.
He particularly enjoyed a run on the nearby beach.
The couple had visiting grand children and they and Joey all adored each
other.
Joey was later joined by a rescued Greyhound from another rescue center.
It was now Joeys turn to help the Greyhound settle into a new home.
