AMY came to AfG at 12 years of age.
We were asked by an elderly couple in Norfolk if we could take their
Greyhound.
We asked why they could not keep such an elderly Greyhound.
We were told, the family owned racing Greyhounds and Amy was no good for
racing, so had never raced.
We were told they had ‘ended up’ with the Greyhound from another family
member and previously she had lived in their bungalow but as she became
‘smelly’ she had been kept in an outbuilding in their garden.
We had a suitable foster home for Amy.
When we arrived to pick Amy up, she was in their garden and was signed
over to us there.
We could see Amy had severe dental disease and noticed the horrendous
smell coming from her mouth.
We had the foster hounds with us, who Amy would be sharing her home
with, they were all introduced over a short walk.
As it was July, the weather was warm and even with windows and sunroofs
open in the van, the smell from dear Amy was overwhelming.
Luckily, we did not have a long drive home.
Once Amy was settled and given a much needed bath and nail trim, she
explored the garden and enjoyed a walk over the park with other hounds.
We had a vet appointment as it was imperative Amy received dental treatment.
Our vet was shocked with the state of decay in Amys mouth, and as she
was an elderly hound, the vet took blood tests as she was worried, it
was obvious the dental decay had been ongoing for years and could by now
have caused damage to Amys liver and kidneys.
Amy was otherwise happy and managing to eat small meals of soft food.
Once Amys bloods came back, our vet was happy to give Amy a much needed
dental and neuter her.
Most of Amys teeth fell out during her dental operation.
Amy was now able to recover and get on with her new life.
She is such a gentle friendly Greyhound and enjoys the company of the
other Greyhounds and her many adventures.
We traced Amys racing history via her ear tattoos and racing name but
found no racing history.
She was from a litter of two, no racing history found for either, or for
her mother whos records show she only produced this one litter.
We do not know how long Amy had been with the elderly couple and will
never understand why she suffered such neglect for so long.
Amy deserved to be a much loved family pet before the age of 12 but in
her new home, she certainly made up for what she had missed out on.
Amy stayed in her foster home as a permanent foster, with AfG covering
the cost of all her care.

foster home.
