ABBY had been acquired from Greyhound breeder/owner/trainer Bob
Creckenden from near Kings Lynn Norfolk, he was known to race his
Greyhounds at Peterborough stadium and others.
Creckenden became known to AFG and other rescues as he was using a
weekly free ad newspaper to offload his unwanted Greyhounds to anyone
who would take them.
Abby was one of them.
A couple contacted us asking if we were able to take in a Greyhound as
she was too boisterous and clumsy around their young baby.
We had a suitable foster home for Abby, so made arrangements to pick her up.
When we arrived, we noticed another black female Greyhound at the house.
We are not sure where she came from but was shy and quiet, compared to Abby.
The couple said they had got the other Greyhound first and later
acquired Abby who had been with them for about one year and that the
other Greyhound was gentle but they could not cope with Abby as well so
they only wanted Abby to go.
Abby was not neutered but her body condition was fairly good apart from
a lack of muscle and overgrown nails (obviously from not having regular
exercise), she was very friendly.
Abby settled well into her foster home and enjoyed lots of walks and
enjoyed meeting other dogs.
Once settled, Abby was neutered.
When we traced Abbys racing history we found she was age 5 1/2, no races
but her last owner was Bob Creckenden as this is the evidence on the
paperwork the couple received from Creckenden when he gave Abby to them.
We are not sure if the couple picked Abby up from Creckendens racing
kennels, or if he dropped her to their house but it would make no
difference to Creckenden as he was happy to offload any of his unwanted
Greyhounds without them being neutered or not bothered for their long
term welfare and security.
We noticed Creckenden had supplied the couple with Retired Greyhound
Trust(RGT) homing paperwork and were concerned he was so called homing
his Greyhounds from free ads in this way.
AfG reported this to the RGT who claimed Creckenden was not listed under
their Greyhound homing scheme and would make sure they challenged him
over the matter.
Abby so enjoyed her lovely walks and was off lead over parks and beaches
to enjoy freedom.
Abbys foster carers decided to adopt her.
Two years later AfG needed a foster home for a young Lurcher (see:
SCOOBY No:1 Other Sighthounds) and once introduced to Abby, Scooby
joined her.
The two hounds were happy together and Scooby was also adopted by his
foster carers.
Photos above show Abby when rescued settling in her home and later with
Scooby.
