MILLY  Came to AfG at 9 years of age.

Her ‘owners’ claimed to have had her for about 5 years.

They acquired her from Norwich Greyhound breeder/owner/trainer, Peter
Debenham who was offloading his unwanted Greyhounds, under the guise of
his Racing Greyhound Retirement Home(RGRH) which were a block of run
down kennels, housing his racing and unwanted Greyhounds.

We asked why they had decided they no longer wanted Milly, they stated
they had not got time to look after her !! How can someone not have
enough time to look after a docile 9 year old Greyhound!!.

We noticed Milly showed signs of discomfort when she got up and were
told she does that often and recently she had not wanted to go for a walk.

We asked if Milly was neutered, we were told no, as Debenham had told
them there was no need as she only had a season about once a year with a
few shows of bleeding.

To AfG this was more concerning than if a female dog came into full
season once or twice a year.

On AfGs sign over form, their is a field required to provide the
‘owners’ veterinary surgery details, for us to receive former vet notes.

Milly had never seen a vet.

We had a foster home for Milly and the foster carer was also concerned
about her discomfort, especially on lying down and getting up.

We needed our vet to see Milly straight away, our vet was very concerned
when examining Milly externally, especially with her showing signs of
discomfort around her abdomen area and the fact she had not had proper
menstrual cycles and at age 9 years and not yet been neutered.

It was important for Milly to be booked in for ultra sound scans and rays.

Once under General anesthetic, the scans showed the bad state of Millys
reproductive organs so she was immediately given a full hysterectomy.

It was a much bigger operation than a straight forward neutering as
there was swelling and infection in her womb and ulcers around her cervix.

Dear Milly, luckily was in the right place at the right time when we
heard about her, as our vet stated, if Milly had have experienced more
pain and if the previous ‘owners’ had then decided to bother enough to
take her to a vet, it would possibly have been too late by then.

We suspect, the previous ‘owners’ knew Millys pain may need veterinary
attention etc,we were more convinced this was the reason they no longer
wanted her, rather than they could no longer look after her, they may
have even been too ignorant to realise poor Milly was in pain as a
result of something that needed checking by a vet.

Milly recovered very well after such a big operation and soon after
found her forever home.

She was a big Greyhound for a female, so gentle and friendly with all
adults, children and all other dogs.

We already knew Milly was one of many of Debenhams ‘cast offs’ but when
checking her ear tattoos found only a race name she had been registered
with but no history of any races contended.

Photos below, show Milly with canine friends in foster care and above
after recovering from her operation in her forever home.
