GENIE came into the care of AfG after we had been asked by another
rescue if we could take her in, knowing our rescued dogs were housed in
foster homes and Genie being a timid Greyhound, sensitive of certain
noises, would not settle in their kennels.

They told us she seemed a gentle friendly small Greyhound who had been
handed into them by a man who claimed to have got her off a friend but
no longer wanted her. This would be only about 6 months after her last
race at Harlow.

We had a foster home for Genie with company of other rescued dogs, so
she was able to be signed over to AfG by the rescue kennels.

Genie was happy with the company of the other rescued dogs and they
helped her gain her confidence, Genie had a calm environment and access
to a large garden.

After allowing her a settling in period, Genie was neutered.

We felt Genie would benefit from a home with the company of other dogs,
However we found Genie a suitable home with an active retired lady who
had plenty of time to spend with Genie and lived in a quiet area next to
a big enclosed field, where she enjoyed daily freedom of running and
exploring to her hearts content.

Genie settled in very well and did not miss out on the company of other
dogs as she joined a group of local dog walkers each day, who became her
canine pals.

Unlike many Greyhounds, Genie did not mind getting wet and muddy and
often had a splash around in a local pond.

Her adopter was mindful of Genies fear of certain loud noises,
especially fireworks and thunderstorms,  her adopter was very patient
and knowledgeable of Genies needs and over the certain times there were
thunderstorms or fireworks heard in the distance, Genie had a ‘cubby
den’ made under the living room table where she was happy to retreat to
during those times.

After about 2 years and at aged nearly 8 years, Sadly Genies adopter
became unwell and could no longer give Genie the care she needed, once
she informed AfG, we sought a foster home for Genie.

Soon Genie was able to settle into her new foster home, this time with
another rescued Greyhound, who she built up a good bond with.

Genies foster home became her forever home, where she remains happy and
settled.

We were not able to find who Genies previous racing owner was but often
racing Greyhounds are ‘owned’ by a group of people called racing
syndicates, which may have been the case for Genie.

We noticed Genies last race at Harlow was 16.09.2006 where she finished
6th (last) with a racing comment ‘Bmp checked RnUp’ which could have
meant she sustained an injury on the track that day and adjudged no
longer of use for racing.
