PIP  was no longer wanted by the ‘owner’ stating his wife had left him 4 months ago and he wanted rid of the Greyhound, he demanded the rescue kennels where Pip had been homed from some years ago (then under different management) take her back.

Pip was handed back to the rescue kennels in poor physical and mental condition, traumatized  by being there and not eating.

Luckily, the rescue knew AfG were knowledgeable about Greyhounds/Sighthounds and tha we placed our rescued dogs into foster homes, so they asked if we were able to take Pip into our care.

We had a suitable foster home with other rescued greyhounds and small dogs and Pip was signed over to us.

We were saddened by the state of neglect Pip was in.

She was obviously such a sweet natured little Greyhound and had obviously suffered neglect for a long period.

Once settled into her foster home and after several good small meals, we took her for a vet examination.

The vet agreed, Pip had suffered neglect for a long period and needed a dental but once she had settled more and had change to gain good body condition.

Pip improved steadily and so enjoyed the company of the other dogs, she was so sweet, we just could not fault her.

As Pips health improved, she gradually started to enjoy running with the other hounds on the spacious parks and beaches where she was taken and we often noticed she would become slightly lame on her front area.

After time we realised our vet needed to examine Pip in case this was anything of concern.

Our vet felt Pip showed a slight discomfort when moving her neck and checking down her spine so it was decided Pip would have an xray.

The xray determined a small fragment of bone chipped off a vertebrae, the fragment was settled into tissue but may sometimes move to touch a nerve, which explained the ocasional discomfort.

Our vet determined caused by blunt force trama to the area but it could not be proven if this was caused by a racing injury or an accident in the previous home (or worse an injury inficted by the previous owner).

The vet explained this was an old injury which would be too complicated and unnecessary for surgery and would only cause Pip minor discomfort now and then after exercise and to use pain relief for her if/when needed.

Sadly when all Pips vet notes(including her neglected state when she came to AFG) were passed to the Rescue kennels, sadly they chose not to take any action to prosecute the previous owner for abuse/neglect and due to their confidentiality clause, they were not obliged to give AfG the identity of Pips previous ‘owner’.

We were happy that Pip came to us and at age 8 knew she would never experience cruelty again.

We were also relieved that Pips occasional lameness was nothing serious and once she had reached her peak body condition her body became much stronger.

Pip was adopted by her foster family and often accompanied AfG with other hounds on our events.

Photos below show Pip when she came to AFG, her xray and her settling in and enjoying her new found family.

Photos above show Pip happy and healthy.
