JADE (named by AfG)  We were made aware of Jade when  supporters noticed
some Greyhounds were being given away in a free ad paper.

They  contacted the advertiser and went along to the kennels.

They were appalled  by the state of the kennels (later found to be an
industry licensed racing kennels).

They saw in particular a very nervous black female Greyhound languishing
in a dirty wooden shed with a mesh enclosure around it.

They could not possibly leave her there in such a state and asked the
owner if she was needing a home.

The owner claimed she was an old dog and doubted anyone would want
her, so  he was happy to offload her,  to the couple with no care for
her future welfare.

Jade was crawling with fleas and as she was going straight to one of our
foster homes, she was immediately treated for fleas and stayed overnight
at our vets who noticed she was riddled with worms so prescribed a de
wormer for administration in a few days time.

We then noticed she was in season and the foster home already had a
recently neutered male Greyhound, so all around it was not fair for Jade
to go there.

Luckily we had another foster home with a gentle female Golden
Retriever, so Jade was able to settle in there.

With a comfortable home, company of another dog and a big garden to
exercise  in, Jade was safe and happy.

We were thrilled to see Jade settle quickly and could see her lovely
nature coming through.

As being in season, it would be sometime until Jade could be neutered,
however she was in need of an urgent dental so after a short time she
had a lot of rotten teeth extracted and must have felt so much better.

Once Jade was neutered, recovered and  deemed fit and healthy, she found
her wonderful forever home with the company of a beautiful male Greyhound.

This helped Jade even more with her confidence in the outside world.

Jade is a gentle kind Greyhound and did not deserve to be left to
languish in filth, we were so lucky we found her and that she could
continue with the life she so deserved and had waited so long for.

Her last race was nine months earlier and she was 61/2 years of age.

Our reports were sent to the governing body of the racing industry as we
had concerns other Greyhounds were being given away at the kennels and
that we had acquired ‘the most neglected one’.

We were told they only held responsibility for Greyhounds running on
their licensed tracks and it was the responsibility of the ‘owners’ to
ensure the Greyhounds were properly cared for after ‘retirement’.

To AfG this is totally unacceptable but we felt the case of Jade needed
to be reported.

Photos below, show the severe dental disease poor Jade had suffered
from, obviously over a long period of time and settling into her foster
home, steadily improving.

Jade was featured on an AfG calendar that photo shown above (by
