CARA (named by AfG) came to our attention when we were approached by a couple at one of our local fundraising stalls, asking if we were able to take in their daughters young Greyhound, as she could no longer look after her, having a toddler and baby on the way and also unable to fund her needed veterinary care.

Luckily we had a suitable home for Cara to go straight to, after being introduced to resident Lurcher Murphy, also adopted from AfG(see: MURPHY dogs homed other sighthounds).

Cara had been acquired by the young woman at age 6 weeks after seeing an advert ‘Greyhound puppies for sale’ in a local pet shop.

No surprise to learn the seller was Norwich Greyhound breeder/owner/trainer Margaret Baily, who no doubt got the benefit of earning tax free money from the sale of her unwanted Greyhounds, offloading to anyone without a homecheck or any regard for their future welfare and safety.

Very concerning that Baily was selling off puppies at age 6 weeks of age.

The young woman explained that Cara had always had various health issues one which had not been cured by any treatment from her vet, she no longer had time to walk her or look after her and could not afford any vets treatment.

Once Cara was examined by our vet (who studied Caras notes from the previous vets) she was not happy with diagnosis or treatment given to Cara.

Cara had a bloated abdomen, was urinating frequently with blood in the urine.

Our vet diagnosed a urinary tract infection which was  treated with medication and once Cara had time to settle into her new home and the infection cured she was taken to our vet to be neutered.

Cara had swelling of the uterus and an abnormality of her ovaries.

Once recovered from her neutering Caras health gradually improved.

Though Cara had been lucky enough to escape being used for the racing industry, she still suffered discomfort in her early years.

Cara enjoyed the company of Murphy, once her personality developed, her carers realised she was an intelligent hound who loved to play, so they enrolled her into an agility club which she enjoyed.

Bailys name had already came to our attention with other Greyhounds she had offloaded, many ending up found as strays or later advertised free by the people who had acquired them from Baily, the lucky ones came to AFG or into other rescues (we dread to think where others, including litters of puppies she sold ended up).

Photos below, show Cara in good health after rescue and with Murphy and other rescued hounds.

Photos above sho Cara and Murphy featured on one of AFGs calendars and on one of her agility competitons.
