LADY it seems had been passed around, neglected and abused, she may
have been raced at a flapping track in Peterlee which is the nearest
track to Hartlepool where she was last ‘kept’.
The only ID were her ear tattoos and registered racing name.
We heard several conflicting stories surrounding Ladys background and no
evidence to prove.
When we picked Lady up, she was notably distressed and panting, timid
and in poor body condition with hair loss over parts of her body, with
the most concerning issue being her sore skin with open infected wounds
and she was full of fleas.
Arrangements were made with our vet immediately to examine Lady, so we
were able to take her directly to the vet.
We traveled with Lady to get her to our vet as soon as possible and
placed a wet coat on her as we were so concerned that she must have a
high temperature, within 45 minutes we were fortunate to get Lady to our
vet without any motorway issues and once we lifted her out of our van
the wet coat was getting dry from her body heat.
We had no previous veterinary records for Lady so we were not able to
determine what had caused her skin issues.
Our vet was so concerned for Ladys condition, that she wanted to keep
Lady under their care, to run blood tests and to get her temperature
down etc.
After 2 days under the care of our vet, Lady had made good progress.
Our vet determined someone had treated Lady ( possibly to get rid of
fleas!) with a product which caused burning to her skin, caused the skin
to be broken then an infection to enter through her skin into her
bloodstream.
Later Reed was contacted but as expected we just received lies and cover
ups, so decided to move on from this, happy to have known about Lady and
be able to save her and give her the life she so deserved.
Lady had been on fluids and now started to gain a good appetite, she had
been treated for external & internal parasites so was able to go into
her foster home with the company of another Greyhound Frankie (who was
adopted from another rescue).
Introductions were made over an enclosed park where Lady was able to
have some freedom and stretch her legs.
Lady then went on to settle into her foster home.
Lady had several vets visits to check her skin and wounds which were all
healing nicely, so once determined fit and healthy, Lady was able to be
neutered.
Due to dear Lady obviously enduring such neglect and abuse, which will
have been why she was so timid, as she had settled in so well with
Frankie and now at age 6 years, AfG and her foster carer agreed Lady
could stay settled where she was in permanent foster care with AfG
funding any further vet care and her food etc.
The RSPCA which covered the Hartlepool area were contacted and provided
with all AfGs photos and vets report, they claim they made several
attempts to visit Reed and whilst at her property, noticed a Basset
Hound through a gap in her curtians who looked neglected.
Later the RSPCA were able to get this dog examined, with a vet finding
he was suffering with a serious untreated ear infection.
The RSPCA informed us this case of animal cruelty would result in a
prosecution but when we asked them if Ladys photos and vet reports could
also be used in the animal cruelty prosecution, without any explanation,
they told AfG “no”.
It seems Reed was possibly responsible for the neglect of other animals
as well as Lady.
We can be grateful that Lady found the life of love and care she
deserved and her story passed to RSPCA managed to save another dog from
a life of neglect and suffering.
We wonder though and doubt if any of the above has ensured Reed cares
for any animals properly!.
Photos below show Ladys condition when she came to AfG, settling into a
clean home, being with Frankie and generally improving.
Photos above show Lady, one with Frankie which was featured on and AfG
calendar, photoed by William Moore.
