Came to AfG: February 2016
GRACE was left at a boarding kennels who often took in stray dogs.
She was no longer wanted, any information left at the kennels proved to be false.
Grace was microchipped as a Greyhound with a date of birth February 2008.
She had no identifying ear tattoos so no racing history could be found.
It is not uncommon for Greyhounds to not have ear tattoos as they can be raced on unlicensed tracks.
Grace was probably the result of being bred by a ‘ back street breeder’.
Grace was very stressed at the kennels, she couldn’t cope with the noise of dogs barking and it was noticed she was not sociable with other dogs.
Sadly she did not want to eat and was already underweight.
Luckily AfG had a suitable foster home for Grace.
A bit wary at first but with experienced Sighthound carers, Grace soon became socialised with the two other resident hounds and with careful introductions, soon became safe with the rescued ferrets and chickens.
Grace did have a high prey drive when she arrived and obviously not used to living in a home but with the help of her fosterers and their confident hounds, she steadily improved.
Because of her behavior we feel Grace was previously encouraged and rewarded for hunting wild animals (hare coursing etc).
It was obvious that Grace would need a lot of time and patience before she would be ready for her forever home.
Once Grace had time to settle into her new routine and gain weight, she was neutered and had a much needed dental.
After several months, Graces foster carers were unable to keep her, as they were not expecting to foster her for so long, however in the time they fostered her, she had very much improved, physically and mentally.
She was then able to go into another foster home with other Sighthounds and small dogs and continued to settle in well to her new home life.
Graces 2nd foster home became her forever home, where she continued to enjoy home life.
Although Grace settled in well with all the other dogs in the home, she was still wary of unknown dogs outdoors on walks.
She was walked early mornings in peace and quiet and had a large garden to roam freely, so this lifestyle suited dear Grace
Grace must have suffered neglect and lack of proper care before she came to AfG, we can never change that but we made sure when she came into our care, she would know nothing but love, respect and enjoyment.
Photos below, show Grace when rescued, getting used to being with other dogs and slowly improving.
Photo above shows Grace when featured on a page of AfG Sighthound Survivors 2017 calendar ( photographed by Belinda Buxton).
