TREACLE: came into our care with her litter sister Suki (see SUKI ).
A lady was needing to find homes for several small dogs, after her
father had become too ill to care for them.
We only saw Treacle and Suki as we were told they were the last two left
to be homed.
They were both in bad condition, so we may have been given the worst two
but it didn’t matter as we had caring foster homes for them go to.
We were told they were both about 8 years old, had been bred from and
had lived outside.
We were told they were litter sisters to the little Terrier Milly (see:
MILLY) who came into our care from this lady almost 1 year earlier.
No vet records were forthcoming, so we had no idea when/if they had last
seen a vet.
Before going to their foster homes, ( as both homes had other rescued
dogs), they were given a bath and groom and treated for fleas.
As shown at the very bottom photos below, Treacle had dry, flaky, sore
itchy skin, a lot of hair loss and dry, sore bald ears caused by either
sunburn or frostbite or both, likely to have been caused by living
outdoors exposed to all weather conditions.
She was very lethargic.
Once settled into her foster home and snoozing for hours on a soft comfy
bed, the next day she was examined by our vet, who prescribed creme to
be massaged into her skin, especially her ears.
Our vet agreed her ears had been damaged from the effects of being
exposed to the elements, and the itchy sore skin caused by a flea allergy.
She was concerned about her tender abdomen area and suggested we soon
booked her in to be neutered.
After her neutering, our vet explained Treacle had given birth to at
least one litter of pups and her womb was showing signs of the start of
an infection.
Over the next weeks, Treacle became healthier, happier and more active,
her walks got longer and she began to enjoy her new adventures and had
the company of rescued Greyhound Mini (see: MINI dogs homed
Greyhounds) who had been adopted from AfG earlier.
After living an outdoor life for so long, her foster carer spent some
time house training her, by using a litter tray, gradually being moved
closer to the door, eventually outside the door in the garden. So
eventually Treacle got used to toileting outdoors.
Treacles foster carer later adopted Treacle as she had settled in so
well as part of the family.
