LACEY came to the attention of AfG when a concerned lady noticed her
being advertised on an internet site.
The lady had already contacted the people for more info and was even
more concerned that a young female Greyhound unneutered would be
attractive for breeding purposes but it seemed the people were happy to
offload her without any home check etc.
Luckily AfG had a suitable foster home for Lacey so with no time to
waste, we were able to arrange to pick her up very quickly.
The story we were given was, the current ‘owners’ got her from their
aunt who got her from their uncle (the last recorded owner/trainer), the
aunt had gone into a womens refuge, so Lacey was left with this couple
who did not want her and obviously were not caring for her properly.
When we left the property with Lacey, some concerned neighbors
questioned us as we walked past, asking if the Greyhound would get a
good home as many of the neighbors had been concerned for her welfare,
left indoors a lot, howling and barking and escaping from the property
running loose on several occasions.
This was because the property was not fenced in and was on a busy road
so we assured them we shared their concerns and we had arranged to pick
Lacey up for fear she would have just been given away to anyone with no
regard for her future welfare and safety.
So the neighbors were also relieved to hear Lacey would have a bright
secure future.
We told the couple they had to sign a change of ownership form, as Lacey
would need to get veterinary treatment including neutering.
They told us, Lacey broke her hock in her last race but it had been
mended and that’s why she was no longer any good for racing.
Once we checked with the veterinary practice the couple submitted on the
form, we were told the vets had no knowledge of the people or of the
Greyhound and they were not registered there at all
When we checked Laceys racing history, we saw she competed in only 2
races at Mildenhall Greyhound track on 12th and 19th June 2015.
It does not seem likely she would have finished 1st on 19th with a
broken hock but that is the only information we have available.
Lacey was underweight and a little unsettled after obviously being moved
it seems from pillar to post over a short period but with an experienced
and comfortable foster home, she soon settled.
Once Lacey had gained weight she was booked into our vets for neutering,
our vet decided to xray the damaged hock and confirmed the hock had been
badly fractured at some point,(a typical racing injury) and had been
pinned with a lot of bone calcified around the damage.
Our vet although an orthopedic surgeon, stated the mend looked messy but
could not comment further as we had no access to the proof of the injury
or the operation to the hock.
Lacey was such a happy, friendly comical hound, who loved all people and
children and was sociable with all other dogs.
Lacey was not like a typical laid back Greyhound, we said she was more
like a Springer Spaniel in a Greyhound body.
After just a short time in her foster home, Lacey found her forever home
with several other rescued dogs and accompanied AfG on many events, she
so loved all the attention, so was such a great ambassador for the
breed, even though she was a drama hound rather than a chilled out hound.
Photos below, show Lacey on rescue day and her damaged hock, later when
settled and on some events.
The top photos show Lacey happy and healthy, one from a page of an AfG
calendar photographed by William Mooore.
