JANI   was picked up as a stray in Norwich at midnight new years eve.
(this is why she was named JANI by AfG).

A pub landlord noticed the terrified Greyhound outside of his pub and
took her indoors, not only was she terrified of the new year fireworks
outside but of the high spirited festivities of the pub customers.

The landlord kindly kept Jani until she could be picked up by the dog
warden the following day.

A few days later, the stray kennels contacted AfG asking if we were able
to take in a Greyhound as her statutory period would soon be ended.

We visited the kennels and saw the sorry state of this dear Greyhound,
the council only provided plastic beds and newspaper for bedding so we
gave the kennel staff a fleece jumper and thick blankets to use for Jani.

This was pre compulsory microchipping and though Jani was wearing a
tatty leather collar, there was no ID tag.

After checking her ear tattoo we found her details and  realised she was
another quick offload from Norwich Greyhound breeder/owner/trainer
Margaret Baily and as she had not raced for over 1 year, it was likely
she was sold or given away to irresponsible people. Unlikely anyone
would be claiming her.

We managed to speak to the pub landlord, who explained how she came into
his care overnight, we thanked him for keeping her safe, he was very
happy to hear Jani would be getting a great home as a family pet with a
secure future.

When we visited the kennels, we noticed a poorly looking Rottweiler and
were told he had already been there for 36 days, we asked if we could
take him once Jani was able to leave and this was agreed ( This was
Starsky: see  dogs homed other breeds).

Once the kennels vet visited he was able to administer both dogs 1st
inoculations, so we were able to take both to a local boarding kennels
together until we could secure foster homes for them.

We picked Jani up (with Starsky) from the  boarding kennels 1 week later
as Starsky had already found a great home and Jani went into a foster
home with several other hounds.

We cannot understand why this poor mid aged Greyhound had been allowed
to race until nearly 6 years of age (all 92 races at Yarmouth)as the
state of neglect she was in had not happened over a short period but
from years of neglect.

Once examined, our vet noted Janis front feet were down on the pasterns
her toes were painful,  tendons in her feet appeared damaged, to add to
her pain Jani had corns on her pads, (our vet believed all were
caused by being’ over raced’ for too long and with a lack of proper
care), once we explained Janis racing history to our vet, she stated
this was hardly a surprise due to Janis condition.

She had severe hair loss over her body and was very timid.

Jani had the company of other rescued Greyhounds in her foster home and
we believe this is why she settled quickly and gained confidence from
the company of the other hounds.

Once deemed fit enough, Jani was neutered and received a dental.

Xrays were taken of her front feet, showing the extent of damage to them.

Jani spent some time in her foster home where her physical and mental
health steadily improved, given proper care (no doubt for the first time
in her life) her true character developed, she proved to be a friendly
happy hound, who evolved into a strong hound with a glossy coat.

Jani was so happy in her foster home, we felt she would not benefit from
being moved on again after the terrible past she had already endured, so
her foster home became he forever home.

We discovered when checking Janis racing history that we had earlier
rescued her mother ( see: BLUEBELLA dogs homed Greyhounds)

We later found more of Janis past with information from a neighbor next
to where Jani had been kept.

We visited these people who told us they got her after seeing a pet shop
advert but she kept getting out so they passed her on to a man in a pub,
we later found this man who lived in a 3rd floor flat, he said he lost
her after Christmas .. so we knew there would be nothing we could do to
change the fact that dear Jani had been mistreated and uncared for by
these people, we had to be satisfied the pub landlord saw her and helped
her and she was safe from then on.

Jani accompanied AfG on many events including visiting schools and care
homes.

Photos below show Jani when rescued and her gradual improvement, also
when meeting her mum, Bluebella.

Jani was a very photogenic hound, photoes above show Janis image by
Greyhound Watch (used on AfG set of cards),over the years Jani has
featured on 3 AfG calendars (above) photoed by David Turner, William
Moore and Greyhound Watch.
