PEG was brought to our attention by a concerned couple, after being
discovered in a newspaper ‘North Norfolk Free Cycle’ whereby people
could advertise unwanted items for free.
They were shocked when they realised the free ad for a Greyhound was
not a Greyhound statue or a coat etc but a ‘live’ Greyhound.
AfG soon contacted the advertisers and were asked to pick her up.
We did so quickly and were greeted on their driveway with a middle aged
Greyhound not in good condition being held on a lead (ready to go).
Once Peg was comfortably settled in our van, the sign over forms were
completed on the driveway.
The people then proceeded to a garage bringing out Pegs filthy bedding
which we declined.
Due to Pegs overall condition, it was obvious she had been kept outdoors.
We asked why Peg was not wanted, they said she was given to their
elderly father a few years back who lived in the bungalow on the
property, he no longer wanted her.
We did not meet him.
We asked if Peg was neutered and were told no, the contact details for
their vet on our sign over form, were later contacted and stated they
had never seen Peg.
They had put posters up on local lamp posts, telegraph poles and the
local shop as well as the paper advertising dear Peg.
Had AfG not been notified of the ad in the paper, dear Pegs future would
have been unthinkable.
We phoned our vet and were lucky enough to have an appointment for Peg
once back in Norwich.
Her vet notes were made, she was treated for fleas and worms, then went
to settle into her foster home, with the company of another Greyhound.
After a period of settling and proper care, Peg was able to be neutered.
It was not a surprise once Pegs ear tattoos were checked, to find she
was yet another free offload from yet another Yarmouth Greyhound
breeder/owner/trainer, this time Irene Barnard, who from AfG experience
alone realised this was another of a group of them happy to offload
their unwanted Greyhounds when of no further use, to anyone who wanted
them, with no regard for their future welfare and safety.
Once deemed ready for adoption, Peg found a home, sadly after a short
period we took Peg back into our care as we felt she was not settling in
the home, luckily we had another foster home ready for her to go to.
Peg quickly settled here, more likely as she had the company of another
rescued Greyhound and they built up a very close bond.
AfG decided with Peg having such a bad start in life and being now
middle aged, as she was now happy and settled she could stay here as a
permanent foster hound.
Photos below, show Peg settling into her 1st foster home.
Photos above show Peg once happy and settled into her permanent foster home.
Peg was featured on two of AfGs calendars in 2011 and in 2014 (with
Greyhound housemate Frankie).
