MOUSE: Was rescued ( along with several other Greyhounds) from a
trainers kennels after her license was removed following serious welfare
issues.
Owners of the dogs there, agreed to sign ownership of all hounds, over
to AfG and two other rescues.
Mouse was one of two who came into the care of AfG ( but more as ‘an
afterthought’ from the owner) who decided to let her be taken, admitting
she had broken her leg at age 3 months but could no longer afford
further veterinary treatment.
Once examined by our vet and later following xrays, it was proven by 3
separate orthopaedic surgeons, that there was no evidence of any
treatment to the leg for the past year.
No veterinary records were received from the owner.
It is believed this dear young hound had received no pain relief for the
untreated injury for approx one year, so seems just left to live with
the condition.
The xrays were shocking, as not only was the wrist fractured ( with the
bones fused) but the leg was also dislocated (90 degrees).
As we were experiencing the global Covid pandemic at the time, other
veterinary treatment was continued ( i.e neutering,
inoculations, parasite treatment) and once Mouse had built up her body
condition, she was admitted for surgery.
Luckily, this dear brave little hound escaped a front leg amputation, as
the vet was able to open the leg, rotate it, fix the wrist and fit an
external bar to the leg (ex fix).
Luckily, after 3 months, the ex fix was removed with further xrays
showing a secure leg, Mouse made a full recovery.
There was damage to the toes and the other foot but as the damage had
been left untreated for so long and the main damage was fixed,no further
treatment would be necessary, so it meant Mouse could finally have the
quality of life a young Greyhound should have, after missing out for so
long.
Mouse is a happy go lucky little hound whos body may have been broken
but her spirit never was.
Sadly, had her leg been treated by a vet at 3 months old, it would have
been a straightforward operation, whereby she could have enjoyed a happy
pain free puppyhood.
She has continued to have a happy life full of love, freedom and happiness.
Sadly it is unknown what became of the mother and a further 21 pups at
the premises. There were 10 in one litter 12 in the second litter ( born
October 2018 and July 2019), so the poor mother (Gottabe Jess) was bred
from twice in one year.
