MAY was in a stray kennels when were were informed of her as she had
only 3 days left until her ‘kill day’.

We were informed about May by a friend, as we had a couple looking for a
quiet middle age small/medium hound to adopt. ( it later transpired that
May once asessed would not be suitable for them).

She was one of many looking to be rescued by the Animal Lifeline UK
group who are involved in networking over the UK working with councils
to try save as many stray dogs as possible to get them into rescue with
the help of great volunteers who also give up their time to transport
dogs across the country to safety.

So knowing about May seeing the emaciated sorry little hound on the
photos and videos, we decided we could take her.

Transport was arranged and she was brought to her foster home with other
Sighthounds who she first met on neutral ground.

Luckily May was good with other dogs and seemed to just want to rest and
relax….and eat.

She had her vet check up and started her inoculations, she had already
been treated for parasites at the stray kennels though her skin was dry
and sore from an earlier flea allergy before kennels.

May was aptly named as she was born the last day of May 2016 which is
the only details along with female Lurcher on her microchip.

It was obvious by her state, that May had recently had a litter of pups
( we dread to think where they are!) and although the kennels had fed
her 4 daily meals for the past 8 days, she was ravenous for food and was
given meals little and often to gradually build her up.

Once she had built up some body condition we were luckily able to have
her neutered and a much needed dental under one general anesthetic.

After this, over the weeks which followed, her foster home has possibly
become her forever home, as we feel as well as her physical neglect she
suffers mental trauma, she is fearful of people, especially men,
uncomfortable round heavy traffic and loud noises in other busy places.

So gradually and with the company of other hounds who she shares her
home with, we hope gradually she will gain more confidence.

She is confident and happy in her home environment and now she has built
up her body condition, she looks such a different hound, is quite
naughty and will chew any paperwork and clothes pegs in particular if
she gets hold of them so she is more like a naughty 2 or 3 year old
really, not a senior hound.

Due to certain behavior around some people and showing a high prey drive
towards any cats or squirrels she spots, it is obvious that poor May has
spent most, if not all of her life, being mistreated, kept outdoors and
being used for wild animal hunting.

in time and with slow careful introductions to her fears, we are sure
dear May will improve with her confidence in the outside world, though
she will never be forced to endure any situation she is not happy with.

We are releived May was found at the time she was and taken to a stray
kennel as judging by her condition when she came into our care, we
cannot imagine the state she was in when she arrived at the kennels 8
days earlier.

Luckily, May was a fortunate hound who after her obvious life of neglect
and abuse, she was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right
time when she was found.
